Cabana Club is a retro wallpaper of vintage swimmers in striped trunks standing around on a cream ground, arms folded, sunglasses on, entirely pleased with themselves. It is a joke that stays funny, which is rare.
The design
The figures are illustrated in a flat mid century style with clean outlines and simple shading, no fussy detail anywhere. Trunks come in navy, red and green stripes and solids, so there is color variation without a busy palette. The men are posed differently from one another, some facing forward, some in profile, which keeps the repeat from becoming obvious. Cream around them is completely plain and lets each figure read as its own little illustration.
Works best in
Powder rooms, pool baths, bars and a laundry. Figurative patterns belong in rooms people visit briefly, where a joke lands and does not wear out.
Style notes
Teak or walnut, chrome, and a round mirror. Towels in navy or a wide stripe. Black and white photography on an adjacent wall, never on this one. Trim in cream or white. A small room is better than a large one here, because the humor works best when people are surrounded by it.
