Cabana Noir is the black and white version. The same retro swimmers, the same striped trunks, rendered entirely in gray on cream so the wallpaper reads as a vintage photograph instead of an illustration.

The design

Without color the pattern depends completely on value, and it holds up. Striped trunks become the strongest graphic element, some nearly black, others pale. Shading on the figures is minimal, which gives them the look of a printed page from an old catalog. Cream stays warm rather than white. The result is considerably more restrained than the colored versions and easier to place in a room that already has a scheme.

Works best in

Bars, powder rooms, home gyms and a laundry. Monochrome figurative patterns suit rooms where color is already decided and another opinion would be unwelcome.

Style notes

Black, chrome and walnut. Barware in clear glass, a black counter, a single brass accent if the room needs warmth. Towels or textiles in white and charcoal. Trim in black or white, either reads correctly. Good directional lighting makes the stripes pop, and a dim room loses the figures entirely.
