Alhambra Star is a Moorish tile wallpaper in cream on terracotta, eight pointed stars and crosses traced in pale strapwork over a sun warmed clay ground. It brings the courtyards of southern Spain to a wall that has never seen the sun.
The design
The stars interlock in the classic Islamic grid, each cream line continuing into the next star so the whole wall reads as one woven lattice, with a small cream star at the centre of every tile. The terracotta carries a soft mottle like a fired glaze. Daylight makes it warm and earthy. Lamplight deepens the clay to paprika and the cream to bone.
Works best in
Living rooms, mudrooms, home offices and reading nooks. It suits a room with plants, books and a worn leather chair.
Style notes
Natural oak, aged brass and black iron sit well against it. Trim in a warm white lets the stars breathe, while a terracotta trim turns the wall into one tiled surface. Add a kilim, a brass tray and a tall cactus. It is happiest with blues nearby and shy of pastels.
