Argent Bloom is a gothic damask wallpaper in carved silver on black, sunflower medallions framed by acanthus scrolls like the ironwork on a cathedral gate. It is dark, ornate and quietly magnificent.
The design
Each sunflower is worked in fine silver relief, its petals radiating from a dark centre, and the acanthus leaves curl around it in a diamond frame. The silver sits over a black ground with the faint cloudiness of aged plaster, so the metal seems to emerge from shadow rather than sit on paper. Candlelight or a low lamp brings out the highlights. Daylight shows the full architecture of the pattern.
Works best in
Bedrooms, powder rooms, kitchens with dark cabinetry and a window seat in a moody hallway. Silver on black gives a formal room its gravity.
Style notes
Ebony, black lacquer or dark walnut furniture, with pewter or blackened steel hardware. Velvet in charcoal, moss or oxblood on the bed. A silver framed mirror doubles the effect. Keep the trim black or deep charcoal, and light it low.
