Coimbra Blue is a tile medallion wallpaper where a large blue rosette sits on point over cream, framed by diagonal bands and small red flower heads at every crossing. More open and more formal than the patchwork tiles.

The design

The central rosette is built from layered petals that radiate out to a ring of scrolling acanthus. Diagonal ribbons run corner to corner and divide the field into diamonds, with a small red and white flower marking each intersection. Blue is laid in two or three washes so the petals have depth. Cream around the medallion is generous, which is what lets a pattern this detailed stay legible on a big wall.

Works best in

Dining rooms, kitchens, powder rooms and an entry hall. Open patterns with a strong central motif suit rooms where the walls are mostly clear of cabinetry.

Style notes

Painted furniture in cream or blue, aged brass, and a wood table with some age on it. Plates in white and blue, linen in flax. Those small red flower heads give permission for one red accent in the room, and one is the right number. Trim in cream. Warm light keeps the blue from turning cold at night.
