Coimbra Violet is a tile medallion wallpaper in violet and cream. The rosette, the diagonal bands and the small flower heads are all traditional, but violet moves the whole thing out of the kitchen and into the rest of the house.

The design

Layered petals radiate from the center of each medallion into a ring of scrolling acanthus, everything worked in violet washes that deepen toward the outlines. Diagonal ribbons divide the cream ground into diamonds. The small flower at each crossing keeps a spot of cream and red. Because violet is darker in value than the usual blue, the medallions read with more weight and the pattern feels less like tile and more like a print.
