Coimbra Wine is a tile medallion wallpaper in a deep burgundy over cream. The darkest of the Coimbra colorways, it trades the freshness of the others for something closer to a formal dining room in an old house.

The design

Each medallion radiates from a small cream center through layered petals in wine and claret, ringed by scrolling acanthus in the deepest tone. Diagonal bands cross the cream field and the small flower at each crossing stays cream and red. The contrast between the dark motif and the pale ground is the highest in this family, which makes the geometry read sharply from any distance.

Works best in

Dining rooms, entryways, powder rooms and a bar. High contrast patterns suit rooms seen mostly in passing, where a subtle wall would go unnoticed.

Style notes

Mahogany or walnut, aged brass, and chairs in cream or a deep green. A worn rug with red in the field. Pewter or silver on the table rather than brass, for contrast. Trim in cream. Candlelight is where this pattern belongs, and it looks considerably better at night than it does at noon.
