The design

Ornate baroque scrollwork in warm gold on a soft ivory ground, repeating at a graceful medium scale. Classical symmetry carried with a light metallic warmth. Ivory does the quiet structural work, letting the gold flourish without ever crowding the eye. From the hall it reads as tone-on-tone warmth, and only at arm's length does the full baroque detail declare itself. Candlelight is its natural habitat, and the ivory returns the favor by softening every shadow.

Works best in

Dining rooms, main bedrooms, entry halls, formal living rooms, and powder rooms with delusions of grandeur. The good kind.

Style notes

Damask with centuries of references and no dust on any of them. It suits mahogany, gilt mirrors, crystal, and curtains in heavy cream silk. An entry hall wears it like good jewelry, and a powder room becomes a small palace with the door shut. If the furniture is modern, the contrast only sharpens both.
