Lisbon Blue is a patchwork azulejo wallpaper, blue and white painted tiles set side by side with every square carrying a different motif. It is the pattern equivalent of a wall that has been added to over many years.

The design

Rosettes, fleurs, stars and interlaced borders each get their own square, some dense and dark with blue, others mostly white with a light outline. The blue ranges from a pale wash to near cobalt depending on the tile. Fine crackle lines run through the glaze and the edges of each square are slightly uneven. That irregularity is what sells it as real ceramic rather than printed geometry.

Works best in

Kitchens, powder rooms, laundry rooms and an entryway. Patchwork patterns are forgiving in rooms full of cabinetry, since there is no layout to line up with.

Style notes

White or pale blue painted cabinetry, brass or nickel, and a butcher block or white counter. Open shelving with plain white dishes. Terracotta pots and a wood floor keep it from going cold. Trim in white. This pattern earns a plain backsplash rather than a second tile, since one ceramic idea per room is enough.
