Lisbon Crimson is a patchwork tile wallpaper in crimson and cream, warmer and louder than the blue original. Red ceramic has a long history in Iberian and Moorish work, and this pattern leans into it.
The design
Every square carries its own motif, from tight radiating rosettes to open fleurs to dense interlaced borders. The crimson varies square to square, some tiles almost brick, others closer to a bright vermillion. Cream between the motifs has a warmth that white would not give. Crackle lines and uneven edges keep the whole thing from looking mechanical. The overall effect from across a room is a warm red glow with detail inside it.
Works best in
Dining rooms, kitchens, entryways and a powder room. Warm patterned walls make a room feel populated even when it is empty, which suits spaces used for eating.
Style notes
Terracotta floors, walnut or a painted cream cabinet, and aged brass. Textiles in cream, ochre or a deep green. Copper pans on a rail are a natural fit. Trim in cream rather than white. This pattern does its best work under warm light, so keep the bulbs low in temperature.
