Lisbon Verde is a patchwork azulejo wallpaper in green and cream. Green ceramic reads fresher than blue and carries none of the nautical association, which makes this the easiest of the Lisbon tiles to use away from a kitchen.

The design

The mixed tile arrangement stays the same, each square with its own rosette, fleur or interlaced border. Greens run from a pale celadon through to a deep bottle, tile by tile. Cream fills the negative space and the glaze carries visible crackle. Some squares are dense enough to read almost solid while others are mostly open, and that variation keeps the eye moving across the wall.

Works best in

Laundry rooms, kitchens, powder rooms and a sunroom. Green pairs with plants and with wood, which is most of what ends up in these rooms anyway.

Style notes

Pale oak or painted cabinetry in cream or sage, with brass. A wood counter rather than stone. Baskets, terracotta and linen in oatmeal. Trim in cream. Real plants extend the palette without adding any pattern. Daylight suits this one, so avoid heavy window coverings if the room has a window at all.
