Lisbon Violet takes the patchwork azulejo idea somewhere unexpected. The same mixed tile wallpaper, painted in violet and white instead of the usual blue, which turns a familiar pattern into something that stops people.

The design

Each square holds a different motif, rosettes and fleurs and radiating stars, worked in violet from pale lilac to a deep grape. The glaze shows the same crackle and the tile edges the same slight wobble. Violet is not a color you see in traditional ceramic, so the pattern keeps all the craft of the original while reading as clearly new. White between the motifs holds it all together.
