Orange is the most underused color in decorating, mostly out of fear. Marmalade Grove shows what everyone's been missing: bright poppies and teal leaves tumbling across a soft ivory ground with berries and airy fronds, warm, alive, and impossible to be gloomy around.

The design

Orange poppies with teal foliage, berries, and light fronds on ivory. Playful stems and open spacing keep the color cheerful rather than loud. Foreground goes to the poppies, while the teal foliage cools everything behind them and the ivory keeps the grove sunlit. Even at a distance the wall reads cheerful, and close up the berries and fronds add a second, smaller story. Open spacing gives every stem its own air, so the color reads generous rather than loud.

Style notes

English cottage optimism with the citrus turned up. White cabinets, warm wood, woven seagrass, and checked cotton in blue or red meet it beautifully. A breakfast nook doubles its appetite, a nursery gets joy with structure, and an entryway hands out good moods at the door. Gloom, formally evicted.
