Pebble Tide is a seigaiha wave wallpaper in watercolour grey on white, overlapping fans the colour of wet river stones. It gives a study or living room a classic Japanese pattern in the quietest palette there is.

The design

Each fan carries concentric grey arcs around a charcoal centre, and the fans overlap in offset rows so the wall reads as a calm grey sea. The watercolour varies from pale mist to slate along every line, so the pattern breathes. From a distance it is a soft tonal pattern. Up close the brush shows. Daylight keeps it cool and clean and lamplight warms it toward taupe.

Works best in

Studies, living rooms, media rooms and mudrooms. Grey on white is the pattern for a room where the furniture carries the colour.

Style notes

Pale ash, white oak and matte black are the partners. White trim keeps it modern, while a charcoal trim makes the fans read as stone. Add a mustard cushion for warmth, a paper lamp and a black steel shelf. Keep the beige out, it muddies the grey.
