A garden wall from some grand old estate, repainted in blush. Peony Pavilion layers soft pink blooms in the chinoiserie tradition (branch, bud, and full flower) so the romance feels inherited rather than applied. It reads gracious in daylight and gentle by lamplight.

The design

Chinoiserie-style peonies in layered blush and rose on a soft ground, with the branch-and-bloom structure of antique panels drawn at a generous, airy scale. The rose tones come forward while the paler buds sink back into the ground, giving the branches real depth of field. Morning sun warms the blush toward apricot, and by lamplight the whole wall settles into a soft rosy hush.

Works best in

Bedrooms, dining rooms, nurseries, entry halls, and any room auditioning for the role of 'the pretty one'.

Style notes

Classic chinoiserie manners, no dynasty required. It flatters cream paint, aged brass, cane seating, and pale French oak, and it will forgive nearly any linen you put near it. Dining rooms and entry halls get the gracious first impression, bedrooms and nurseries get the softness, and everyone feels slightly better dressed. Skirted seating and scalloped lampshades are welcome here, within reason. Politeness, rendered botanically.
