Porto Blue is an ornate azulejo wallpaper where a single tile design runs edge to edge without interruption, blue on cream, the pattern crossing every grout line as though the wall were laid in one piece.

The design

Each tile carries a quarter of a larger medallion, so four tiles together complete a rosette and the field resolves into interlocking circles and quatrefoils. Blue is laid in flat washes with darker outlines, the way a glaze pools against a raised line. Cream shows through in the negative spaces and carries a warm cast. Fine grout lines cross the pattern and are the only reminder that this is tile at all.

Works best in

Kitchens, bathrooms, powder rooms and a laundry. Continuous tile patterns suit rooms with long uninterrupted walls where the eye can follow the geometry.

Style notes

Cream or white cabinetry, aged brass, and a wood counter or plain white stone. Plates and bowls in white, blue or unglazed clay. A wood floor keeps the room from going cold. Trim in cream. Avoid a patterned floor tile, since two ceramic geometries in one room is a fight nobody wins.
