Porto Violet is an ornate tile wallpaper where violet takes the place blue usually holds. The geometry is traditional Portuguese and the color is not, which is exactly why it works.

The design

Quarter medallions on each tile join across the grout lines to complete rosettes and quatrefoils in a continuous field. Violet is laid in washes that pool darker at the outlines, mimicking glaze against a raised edge. Cream in the open areas keeps the wall bright. The violet shifts toward lilac in daylight and deepens toward grape under a lamp, which gives a small room two personalities.

Works best in

Powder rooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms and a kitchen. Continuous geometry makes a narrow room feel wider because the pattern carries the eye around corners.

Style notes

White or gray cabinetry, nickel or brass, and a white stone counter. Towels in white or cream, nothing patterned. A small brass mirror rather than a large frameless one. Trim in cream. A single unglazed clay pot with something green in it keeps the scheme from feeling too composed.
