Sintra Blue is an aged tile wallpaper, blue and white glazed squares worn soft the way real ceramic goes after a century on an exterior wall. Nothing here is crisp, and that is the entire character of it.

The design

Large quatrefoil medallions alternate with small dark floral squares in a regular grid. The blue has faded unevenly, deeper in some tiles and nearly gray in others, with pale patches where the glaze has thinned. Grout lines are wide and irregular. A soft haze sits over the whole surface. The pattern is formal but the wear is not, and the contrast between those two things is what makes it interesting.

Works best in

Entryways, powder rooms, kitchens and a bathroom. Worn finishes suit older houses and give a new build some age it has not earned yet.

Style notes

Painted furniture with visible wear, aged brass, and a stone or terracotta floor. Textiles in white, flax and faded indigo. Nothing shiny, and nothing new looking. Trim in an off white or a soft gray. A worn wood bench and an old mirror do more for this wall than anything from a showroom.
