Sintra Plum is an aged tile wallpaper in plum and white, the glaze faded and patchy, the grout lines wide and uneven. Plum gives the weathering a warmth that the blue version does not have.

The design

Quatrefoil medallions alternate with small dark floral squares across a loose grid. The plum runs from a dusty mauve in the worn areas to a deep aubergine where the glaze stayed thick. Whole tiles have faded further than their neighbors, which breaks up any sense of machine regularity. A soft bloom over the surface suggests a wall that has been washed many times. Detail is still there, just softened.

Works best in

Powder rooms, entryways, laundry rooms and a bathroom. Faded warm colors flatter people, which is a real consideration in any room with a mirror.

Style notes

Painted or limed wood, aged brass, and a stone floor. Towels in bone or soft gray. A vanity in a deep plum or near black anchors the scheme. Trim in off white. Avoid strong overhead light, which exaggerates the fade into patchiness rather than letting it read as age.
