Every grand house deserves one room with birds in it. Teal Aviary perches pheasants among peach, cream, and golden blossoms on a deep teal ground, in the tradition of chinoiserie panels that turned dining rooms into destinations. Ornate, certainly, but composed, never crowded.

The design

Chinoiserie-style birds and winding vines with peach, cream, and gold blossoms over rich teal, layered with the detail of antique painted silk. The peach and gold blossoms come forward like lit lanterns against the teal, and the birds hold the middle ground with unhurried authority. The darker the hour, the deeper the ground reads, which is why it does its best entertaining after sunset.

Style notes

Chinoiserie in the grand-house tradition, carried lightly. It stands beautifully with dark mahogany, polished brass, celadon ceramics, and drapery in generous folds. Teal trim wraps the room into one piece, peach accents lift the bloom, and gold hardware picks up the blossoms after dark. In a dining room it earns the leaf in the table, and in a hallway it slows guests down on purpose.
