Cats have always believed they belong in portraiture. The Victorians simply agreed. Velvet Whiskers is a Victorian cat wallpaper that dresses a society of felines in period coats and hats in warm vintage tones against a rich dark ground: a moody parlour of small aristocrats who are, frankly, unsurprised by your admiration.

The design

Portrait-style Victorian cats in coats and hats on a deep vintage palette, with rich detail and a formal arrangement. Deadpan whimsy, museum manners. The faces surface one at a time as you cross the room, which is exactly how a good gallery works. The dark ground handles museum duty, keeping each small aristocrat softly lit against the gloom. Up close, the tailoring rewards a slow look.

Works best in

Powder rooms, libraries, dining rooms, entryways, nurseries, eclectic living rooms, and hallways where guests should stop and stare.

Style notes

The conceit is the country-house portrait corridor, recast with a committee of cats. Aged oak, bottle-green paint, gilt frames, and a tufted ottoman or two maintain the standard. A library gains instant ancestry and a powder room becomes a receiving line, collars straightening on the way in. Nurseries take it surprisingly well, since children respect authority with whiskers.
