Coral Fernery is a dark botanical wallpaper that behaves like a garden at dusk. Teal ferns and coral wildflowers crowd together over a near black ground, close enough that you cannot see where one plant ends and the next begins.

The design

The ferns are the structure, arching and overlapping in layers that recede into shadow. Coral umbels and pale seedheads break the green up and give the eye somewhere to land. Because the ground is so dark, the lighter blooms appear to float in front of the wall rather than sit on it. Morning light brings out the teal. Lamplight pushes the coral forward and the whole thing turns warmer.

Works best in

Bedrooms, dining rooms, powder rooms and a sunroom that gets more shade than sun. Dark botanicals make a large room feel enclosed and a small one feel deliberate.

Walnut and cane are natural partners, and antique brass beats nickel every time. Bedding or upholstery in cream, rust or a muddy olive keeps the palette honest.
