Its name isn't hedging. Opulence stacks jewel-toned peonies (saturated pink, orange, and teal) against rich black, a floral with the glow of stained glass. It's the wall you build a dinner party around, then take credit for. Maximalism, edited.
The design
Jewel-tone peonies in pink, orange, and teal on a rich black ground. Saturated blooms with vintage weight and luxurious contrast. The pink and orange blooms burn brightest against the black, with teal cooling the arrangement so it never tips into noise. Distance gives you glow, and closeness gives you the vintage weight of the drawing. After dark the ground disappears entirely and the flowers seem to float on nothing, which suits them.
Works best in
Dining rooms, bedrooms, elegant entryways, powder rooms, and occasions that deserve a better backdrop.
Style notes
Maximalist chinoiserie manners with a jewel-box heart. It dresses well with dark lacquer, gilded frames, marble, and velvet in emerald or blush. An entryway announces the household's standards immediately, and a dining room becomes the reason people accept invitations. Restraint had its chance, and it can keep the hallway.
