The design

Illustrated axolotls in top hats amid swirling Victorian motifs, in rich teal, gold, and slate. Moody, ornate, and deadpan in its whimsy. The gold does the signaling, lifting hat brims and swirl edges out of the teal shadow. From a distance the whole wall passes for rich damask, and the amphibians surface only on approach, which is exactly the right pacing for the joke. Slate keeps the palette cool, so the teal reads formal rather than tropical.
