Frosted Fernery cools the whole idea down. This dark botanical wallpaper masses blue green ferns and pale cream fronds against near black, and the effect is closer to frost on a window than to a summer border.

The design

The ferns are the entire cast here, no flowers competing for attention. Some fronds are deep slate teal, others are bleached to bone and set forward, so the wall has genuine front and back. Tiny white flower heads dust the gaps. The palette stays cool throughout, which makes this the quietest of the fern patterns even though the plants are just as dense.

Works best in

Bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices and powder rooms. Cool dark walls are restful rather than dramatic, which suits rooms meant for sleeping and thinking.

Style notes

Pale oak or ash against the dark wall, with brushed nickel or blackened steel. Bedding in white, flax or the palest blue. Skip warm woods here, since cherry and teak fight the blue. A slate or charcoal trim reads as a frame. Keep lighting cool and low, and let the bleached ferns carry the brightness.
