Gilded Moth is a dark entomology wallpaper, a great moth spreading gold banded wings across a charcoal ground while smaller moths and dusky blooms gather around it. Part specimen cabinet, part velvet curtain.

The design

The central moth is rendered in fine detail, with wings of black, gold and umber and a faint skull marking on its back, the way the old naturalists painted it. Around it, dark roses and rust coloured leaves fade into the ground, and flecks of gold catch the light like foil on a book spine. The charcoal ground is deep and slightly mottled. Low light makes the gold flicker. Strong light shows every scale on the wings.

Works best in

Libraries, dining rooms, media rooms and a living room built for winter evenings. This is a wallpaper for a room where people stay late.

Style notes

Ebony or dark walnut shelving, antique brass lamps, and leather in cognac or oxblood. A glass domed curiosity on the shelf is the only prop it needs. Black trim keeps it serious. Light it with lamps, never with a bright ceiling fixture.

Order with confidence

Gilded Moth was designed at WALLPLICITY and engineered as a seamless repeat, so the specimens never break at a panel edge. Printed as peel and stick or as traditional wallpaper. Samples available.
