Golden Fernery is the autumn cousin in this group. Green ferns and gold bracken tangle across a near black ground on a dark botanical wallpaper that reads warm from the first glance.

The design

Copper and old gold fronds sit in front, catching the light, while deeper green foliage fills in behind them. Small rust flower heads thread through the gaps. The gold is not metallic, more the color of bracken in October, so it stays soft instead of glittering. In a room with warm bulbs the whole wall leans amber. In daylight the greens come back forward.

Works best in

Studies, dining rooms, bedrooms and entryways. Warm dark walls are forgiving in rooms with little natural light, where cooler colors tend to go gray.

Style notes

Walnut, leather and aged brass. Wool in rust, moss or oatmeal. A brass picture light over a single piece of art is enough. Trim in a deep olive or bronze continues the wall rather than boxing it in. Avoid cool gray textiles, which make the gold look yellow instead of warm.
