A frog, painted in watercolor with the seriousness of a nineteenth-century naturalist, gazes out from shadowy depths. Pond Life splits the difference between whimsy and gravitas: imaginative enough for a child's room, moody enough for a library. It's amphibian portraiture, and it commits.

The design

Vintage watercolor frogs on a darkly atmospheric ground, painterly and soft-edged, with enough shadow to keep the whimsy from tipping into cute. Each frog's lit face comes forward while the murky greens sink away, giving every portrait real depth. Daylight brings out the brushwork and the mottled shadows, while evening pulls the whole wall toward true pond. From across the room it is simply a handsome dark botanical, and then you notice the eyes.

Works best in

Libraries, bedrooms, nurseries with a sense of humor, reading corners, and powder rooms that appreciate an audience.

Style notes

Victorian natural history with its tongue firmly in cheek. Dark wood shelving, aged brass, worn leather, and a green library lamp complete the ecosystem. Libraries and reading corners gain gravitas, a nursery gains a bedtime cast of characters, and a powder room gains the best conversation opener in the house.
