The design

Meerkat portraits in top hats and bow ties, warm browns and cream over deep umber. Fine fur detail, storybook warmth gone moody. The cream faces and collars catch the light first, so every sentry stays legible wherever the lamp happens to be. The umber ground soaks up glare and gives the portraits their gallery hush, warmer by lamplight than the palette suggests.

Style notes

Victorian portraiture applied to entirely the wrong species, played straight. It stands well with tobacco leather, dark oak, antiqued brass and a plaid or herringbone throw for the off-duty hours. Cream trim brightens the watch, and deep brown trim extends it. In a home office it supervises without comment, and in an entryway nothing gets past it, least of all guests.
