Abbey Gold is the boldest wallpaper in this group. Large gold acanthus crests stand in ranks across a blackened green ground, each one big enough to read clearly from across a room.
The design
The crests are built from thick curling acanthus leaves that rise to a point, with smaller scrolls filling the space between. Gold carries a burnished quality, brighter at the leaf tips and shading to bronze in the hollows. The ground is not quite black, holding enough green to warm the gold. Scale is what makes this one work: fewer, larger motifs give a small room presence instead of clutter.
Works best in
Entryways, powder rooms, dining rooms and a bar. Large scale patterns are wasted on large walls seen from a distance, so use this one where people stand close.
Style notes
Dark stained wood, aged brass, and a console with some weight to it. A gilt mirror is not a cliche here, it is the right answer. Textiles in bronze, oxblood or deep green. Paint the trim and any door in the same blackened green. Keep the lighting warm and low, and let the gold do the rest.
