Slate Damask is the subtlest wallpaper in this collection. A classical damask bloom is worked tone on tone in slate gray over deep charcoal, so close in value that the pattern only appears when the light is right.
The design
The motif is traditional, a full flower head framed by curling leaves and linked by fine scrolls into a continuous field. Everything is rendered in a narrow band of grays with a faint blue cast. In flat light the wall reads as a single dark charcoal. Turn a lamp on nearby and the damask surfaces, then fades again as you move away. That appearing and disappearing is the entire point of the design.
Works best in
Bedrooms, media rooms, home offices and a dining room. Tonal patterns suit rooms where you want depth on the walls without any visual noise.
Style notes
This one takes almost anything. Walnut, black steel, brass, nickel, all of it reads well against neutral charcoal. Bedding in white, bone or a strong color, since the wall makes no demands. Trim in the same charcoal. Art shows beautifully against a tonal ground, so this is the pattern to choose if you actually want to hang pictures.
