Cobalt Scrollwork is a wallpaper of black scrolled crests standing on a deep cobalt blue. Same open spacing as the jade version, entirely different temperature, and the blue carries a teal undertone that keeps it from reading as navy.

The design

Paired scrolls curl away from a central fleur in each crest, with smaller flourishes trailing below. Cobalt behind them is deep and slightly variable, more saturated in the open areas and darkening where it meets the black. The generous spacing lets each crest be seen as a complete shape. There is a lacquered quality to the whole thing, as though the pattern has been laid over a painted panel.

Works best in

Entryways, powder rooms, living rooms and a dining room. Strong blue makes a windowless entry feel intentional rather than unfortunate.

Style notes

Black or walnut furniture, brass hardware, and a runner in a flat weave with some red in it. Textiles in cream, camel or rust. Brass reads warmer than nickel against cobalt and is the better choice. Trim in the same cobalt or in black. A mirror opposite the door doubles the pattern and the light at once.
