Amber Silhouette is a damask wallpaper that drops a black medallion onto a warm amber ground the color of old whisky. The contrast is softer than the ruby version and the mood is considerably more relaxed.

The design

The medallion shape stays the same, a central rosette with scrolling arms linking into a continuous frame. Against amber the black loses some of its hardness and starts to read as brown in certain light. The ground has visible variation, lighter toward the center of each open area and deeper at the edges, which gives the wall depth without adding any pattern. Warm and graphic at the same time, which is a difficult combination to find.

Works best in

Entryways, dining rooms, studies and a bar. Amber walls make a dark hallway feel lit even when it is not.

Style notes

Walnut or teak, aged brass, and a bench in black leather. Textiles in cream, rust or chocolate. Black accents tie back to the motif. Trim in a deep brown or black. Avoid gray, which turns the amber sour. Warm bulbs push the whole scheme toward gold, which is the effect worth chasing.
