Burgundy Harlequin is a diamond check wallpaper in two shades of wine with a fine gold pinline, tall harlequin diamonds climbing the wall like the curtain of an old theatre. It brings drama to a bedroom without a single ruffle.
The design
The diamonds alternate between a deep claret and a softer garnet, each one edged in a hairline of gold that catches the light at every point. The grounds carry a faint velvet mottle so the wall has depth rather than flatness. From across the room it reads as a rich burgundy with a gold sparkle. Up close the geometry is crisp and the gold is precise.
Works best in
Bedrooms, bars, kitchens with dark cabinets and window seats. It suits a room that comes alive after dark.
Style notes
Mahogany, brass and a mirror with a little age on it are the natural partners. Trim in a deep burgundy lets the diamonds run to the ceiling, while a cream trim turns them into a framed panel. Add velvet, a fringed lamp and one piece of green glass. Keep the lighting low and warm.
