Cathedral Flame turns the heat all the way up. Tall leaded glass bays in scarlet and rose run between dark mullions on this wallpaper, and with the cool tones removed the whole wall reads as fire behind glass.

The design

Pointed lancets stack vertically inside each bay, filled with reds that shift from a bright orange scarlet through to deep magenta at the edges. Darker rose flowers open at intervals down the columns. Mullions in near black hold the structure and stop the color from becoming a single undifferentiated mass. Amber diamonds catch between the larger shapes. Nothing cool appears anywhere in the pattern, which is what gives it such force.

Works best in

Bars, dining rooms, powder rooms and a den. Saturated single temperature walls belong in rooms used at night, where they read as rich rather than relentless.

Style notes

Black cabinetry, brass or blackened steel, and a dark counter. Glassware clear, never colored. Textiles in black, bronze or deep green, since green is the one color that holds its own against this much red. Trim in black. Low light only. Under a bright ceiling fixture the pattern loses all of its depth.
