Checkmate is a black and white checkered floral wallpaper that alternates black and white squares dotted with simple blooms, landing somewhere between cafe floor and mod print. The florals soften the geometry enough to keep it friendly: proof that playful and minimal share a wall happily.

The design

Simple stylized flowers set into a black-and-white checkerboard: high-contrast retro geometry with a soft floral counterpoint. The white squares push forward and the black squares drop back, which keeps the grid lively instead of flat. At a distance the flowers dissolve into a soft gray shimmer over the checkerboard, and up close they snap into focus, a bloom in every square. Strong daylight makes it read sharp and architectural, while low light turns it pleasantly filmic.

Style notes

Mod geometry with a florist's conscience. Pair it with bentwood chairs, black metal, marble or white stone surfaces, and one loud accent color you were warned about. Entryways and kitchens use its rhythm to organize the traffic, while a bathroom in it feels like a Parisian cafe that happens to have a shower. Monochrome, but nobody would call it quiet.
