Claret Acanthus is a dense damask wallpaper of deep red foliage swirling over black. There is no open ground to speak of, just leaf on leaf, and the result reads more like carved wood than printed paper.
The design
Acanthus leaves curl and overlap in every direction, each one modeled with highlights along the edges and shadow in the folds. The claret runs from a bright oxblood on the raised surfaces down to near black in the recesses. Because the coverage is total, the wall has no obvious rhythm and no place where the eye stops. In a dark room the red holds long after everything else has gone.
Works best in
Dining rooms, bars, libraries and an entryway. All over patterns are the right choice where a wall has doors or windows chopping it up, since there is no layout to interrupt.
Style notes
Mahogany and antique brass, with chairs in black leather. Textiles in gold, bone or a deep green. Keep the floor plain, because an Oriental rug plus this wall is one pattern too many. Trim in black. Warm light from low fixtures brings out the modeling, while overhead light flattens it into a single red mass.
