Crimson Abbey is a midnight blue wallpaper scattered with crimson tulips and chrysanthemums, their foliage worked in pewter and bone. Blue and red is a harder pairing than it sounds, and this one pulls it off by keeping the blue very dark.
The design
Tulips stand upright on slim stems while the chrysanthemums open flat and full, so the pattern has two different flower rhythms running at once. The leaves are the surprise, rendered in cool gray and cream rather than green, which is what lets the crimson stay clean against the blue. Small buds fill the gaps. From a distance the wall reads as deep navy with red sparks across it.
Works best in
Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and an entryway. The cool ground makes a warm room feel balanced rather than heavy.
Style notes
Walnut or painted furniture in a deep blue, with brass or pewter hardware. Upholstery in cream, camel or a dull gold. Red accents are already handled by the wall, so keep the textiles quiet. Trim in the same midnight blue reads best. A pale ceiling lifts the room and keeps the blue from feeling like a lid.
