Garnet blooms and gold oak leaves on a worn dark ground. Garnet Vestry is a wallpaper with the look of something that has been on the wall of a good house for a century, which is exactly the effect it was built for.
The design
The blooms open in deep garnet with darker centers, set between oak and acanthus leaves in old gold and bone. The ground behind them is not a flat color but a mottled near black that shifts toward brown in places, as though the pigment has aged unevenly. That aging is what keeps the pattern from looking new. Individual leaves come forward and recede as the light changes.
Works best in
Libraries, dining rooms, bedrooms and studies. Rooms full of books and old furniture take this pattern best, because it agrees with them rather than competing.
Style notes
Mahogany or quartersawn oak, antique brass, and leather with visible wear. Textiles in oxblood, gold and deep olive. A worn Persian rug is the correct floor and any new looking rug will feel wrong. Trim in a deep bronze or aubergine. Lamps with parchment shades, never a bright overhead.
