For people who find plaid a little stiff: Harbor Check, a painterly check wallpaper in teal, cream and driftwood brown. Loose squares of color overlap on a cream ground, each one streaked and dragged at the edges, and the wall settles into the calm of a boathouse on a gray morning.

The design

Blocks of teal, taupe and olive brown sit in a soft grid, some solid, some scraped thin enough to show the cream beneath, with a woven crosshatch running through every square. Nothing lines up too neatly, which is the charm. From across the room it reads as a relaxed coastal check in sea and sand. Up close the layered color and the frayed edges make it feel like a length of old workwear cloth, earthy and lived in.

Works best in

Kitchens, living rooms, mudrooms, powder rooms, studies and family rooms. It hides scuffs in a mudroom better than plain paint.

Style notes

Coastal and earthy, with a modern farmhouse streak. Pair it with teal board and batten, walnut, jute and black metal. Bright daylight keeps the teal fresh, and warm evening light pulls the browns forward. In a kitchen it makes open shelving look composed instead of cluttered.
