Some rooms want jewelry. Midnight Plume is a gold fan wallpaper on a deep navy ground, and it wears a wall the way a cuff wears a wrist. The arches rise in ranks, each one filled with tapering gold rays that catch whatever light you give them.
The design
Up close the gold has weight to it, brushed and slightly uneven, so the metal reads as leaf rather than ink. Step back and the fans lock into columns that pull the eye toward the ceiling. Navy holds everything down and keeps the gold from shouting. In lamplight the whole wall warms and the arches seem to lift off the ground.
Works best in
Dining rooms, bars, powder rooms and a home office that wants some spine. The vertical rhythm makes a low ceiling feel taller and a narrow room feel deliberate.
Style notes
Pair it with ebony or dark walnut, polished brass hardware, and a mirror with a heavy frame. Velvet in oxblood or forest green gives the navy something to argue with. Keep the trim dark rather than white, since white edges fight the gold. One good picture light aimed at the wall does more work than a whole ceiling of cans.
