In black and white, Art Nouveau lets the line do all the talking. Nouveau Noir is an Art Nouveau bird wallpaper that mirrors stylized birds and moody botanicals in crisp black on white, elegant and graphic in the same breath: a pattern that manages to be ornate and disciplined at once.
The design
Stylized birds and flowing botanicals in crisp black and white, arranged in a mirrored Art Nouveau layout with high contrast, fine linework, and formal symmetry. With color out of the picture, the linework carries everything, and it turns out to be plenty. The mirrored birds give the wall a formal cadence you feel more than count. From across the room it reads as refined pattern, and up close it reads as illustration, a trade that never gets old.
Works best in
Powder rooms, dining rooms, headboard walls, and entries that dress in monochrome on purpose.
Style notes
Beardsley era line discipline, minus the scandal. It works with black marble, polished chrome or silver, crisp white paint, and one strong mirror. A powder room becomes a set piece, and a headboard wall gains architecture without a single molding. Add color through flowers if you like: the wall will tolerate it graciously.
