Ruby Silhouette reverses the usual damask arrangement. Instead of a pale motif on a dark ground, this wallpaper sets a black damask medallion on saturated ruby, so the pattern reads as shadow cut out of color.

The design

The medallion is symmetrical and formal, built around a central rosette with scrolling arms that meet the neighboring units to form a continuous ogee frame. Black fills the motif completely with only the faintest internal detail. Ruby behind it carries a soft cloudiness that keeps a large wall from going flat. The silhouette treatment makes this read as more contemporary than a traditional damask despite the classical shape.

Works best in

Dining rooms, bars, powder rooms and a home office with some nerve. Strong single color walls suit rooms where the furniture is dark and simple.

Style notes

Black lacquer or ebonized wood, brass, and chairs in black. Bring in cream through a rug or a lampshade so the room has somewhere to breathe.
