This is the formal one. Scarlet Reliquary is a damask wallpaper where scarlet tulips sit inside gold acanthus crests on black, arranged in the strict mirrored symmetry that damask has always used.

The design

Each crest is built around a central tulip with acanthus leaves curling away on both sides, and the whole unit repeats in a steady brick set down the wall. The gold is antiqued rather than bright, closer to old picture frame than new brass. Scarlet appears only inside the flowers, which is why it reads so strongly. Black between the crests gives the arrangement air and keeps the formality from turning heavy.

Works best in

Dining rooms, entryways, powder rooms and a formal living room. Symmetrical patterns suit rooms with symmetrical architecture, so a fireplace or a pair of windows helps.

Style notes

Mahogany, gilt frames, and antique brass. Chairs in scarlet or black velvet. This pattern earns proper window treatments rather than blinds. Trim in black gloss if the room can take it, otherwise a deep charcoal. A chandelier is not too much here. Anything mid century modern will fight it, so keep the furniture traditional.
