Thistle Nocturne is a dark arts and crafts wallpaper where gold leaves climb a near black ground and ink blue thistle heads open along the stems. It has the seriousness of a Victorian library and none of the dust.
The design
The leaves are the loudest element, worked in old gold with dark veining so they read as metal rather than foliage. Between them the thistles sit in deep blue with fine bristled centers. Stems curve upward in long unbroken lines, which gives the pattern its lift. The black ground carries a faint woven grain that stops it from going flat across a full wall.
Works best in
Bedrooms, studies, dining rooms and powder rooms. Dark walls with a strong vertical climb suit tall rooms, and the same climb helps a modest one too.
Style notes
Quartersawn oak and antique brass belong here. Textiles in moss, oxblood or a heavy flax. Trim in near black or deep bronze rather than white, which would cut the stems off mid climb. A single antique rug with a faded field keeps the floor from competing. Warm low lighting brings the gold up and lets the blue go quiet.
