Verdant Choir is a wallpaper of gold and green acanthus scrolls turning across a near black ground, more foliage than flower, with the loose sculptural quality of carved wood.
The design
Long leaves curl back on themselves in deep gold and moss green, overlapping enough that the scrolls seem to pass in front of and behind one another. There is no strict grid, so the pattern reads as continuous growth rather than repetition. Highlights along the leaf edges give the whole surface a carved look. In dim light the gold holds and the green drops away, which changes the character of the room after dark.
Works best in
Media rooms, studies, dining rooms and bedrooms. Patterns without an obvious grid are easier on the eye in rooms where you sit for a long time.
Style notes
Walnut or ebonized oak, antique brass, and deep upholstery. Wool and velvet in olive, bronze or charcoal. Keep art to a minimum on this wall. Trim in near black. If there is a screen in the room, the dark ground will absorb the glare instead of bouncing it back, which is the practical reason to choose a pattern this dark.
