Stripes and checks are the workhorses of a decorated house. A stripe lifts a low ceiling. A check softens a hallway. Neither competes with art, curtains or a busy rug, which is why designers reach for them when a room already has a lot going on.

These run from fine ticking stripes to wide blocks and gingham-scale checks, in muted blues, greens, ochres and warm neutrals. Choose peel and stick or traditional, in 24 inch panels from 3ft to 12ft tall.
